The war in Ukraine still rages
Four relentless years of bombs, blackouts, damaged homes and broken dreams. In 2025 there were only four days without attacks. The other 361 were filled with fear.
‘One night, last month, I found myself spending the night in a shelter in Kyiv as sirens sounded across the city and explosions echoed nearby. It was deeply unsettling, dark and freezing cold. For me, it was two days. For the people of Ukraine, it has now been four years.’ – David Weisberg, Executive Director, World Jewish Relief USA
But they are not alone.
World Jewish Relief is still there – delivering emergency food to older people trapped in their homes, repairing bomb-damaged properties, providing vital home care, trauma support and help for children and families rebuilding their lives.
Others have left. We have not.
Not Forgotten
“I escaped with nothing, now thanks to World Jewish Relief, I have something”
Olena and her family lived in eastern Ukraine where she worked at the nuclear plant. Life was happy. When Russian tanks rolled across the border, everything changed. Olena knew she had to get her family out. Like the story we tell at Pesach, Olena, like many Ukrainians, was forced to leave her home with nothing and start anew. She fled with her son to Kyiv, but her husband was forced to stay behind.
She arrived in Kyiv with no family, no contacts, no job. So many Ukrainians have been displaced both inside and outside of Ukraine. Olena reached out to World Jewish Relief and enrolled on our Back to Work program. She received trauma support, sessions with psychologists, and more formal training and guidance to help her to find a job and provide for her family.
She now runs her own bakery, supplying cafes and restaurants all over Kyiv. She yearns to go back to eastern Ukraine, to live the normal family life she had before. Like so many.
Will you make sure the people of Ukraine are not forgotten this Pesach?
Not Alone
For Polina, an older Jewish lady in her 70s, the night the bomb exploded will stay with her forever. Her home, her confidence, her sense of safety – all damaged. When a Russian missile hit her home, her windows were completely destroyed, glass flew everywhere and struck her in the eye. She lay in bed helpless, fearing the worst.
After the bombing she suffered a stroke due to the pressure and stress of the war and fear of another attack. World Jewish Relief was able to fix her windows, and repair parts of her home so she could be safe and secure. The next time bombs hit, her windows remained intact. Polina now feels safer, though is still fearful every time the sirens ring.
So many homes and lives have been destroyed by this war, so many people like Polina still need our help.
“I appreciate your help. Thank you so very much for being in my life”
